Exploring the heritage of the ‘cadira eivissenca‘, a quintessential piece of rural furniture in Ibiza and Formentera, we see a tradition in peril. These low, sturdy chairs, integral to the minimalist lifestyle in country houses, are designed for practicality, accommodating various household tasks. Their construction is simplistic yet functional: four legs, a crossbar, and a seat made of natural materials like bulrush. Despite their practicality and unique design, the craft of making these chairs is fading, with few artisans left who possess the skills of ‘cadirer‘ or ‘cordadora de cadires‘. This decline not only represents a loss of unique, handcrafted furniture but also a fading slice of rural Ibizan culture.
