Mägo de Oz, on Ibiza: “The rock audience is very loyal”

At the concert next Friday, August 5th, scheduled at 10:30pm in the parque Reina Sofía on Ibiza, the Madrid folk metal band Mägo de Oz will present their new album, 'Bandera Negra', as well as revisiting legendary songs such as 'Fiesta pagana'

Next August 5th, Día de Santa María, Mägo de Oz will disembark on Ibiza with their tour ‘Al abordaje!’ and their new work, ‘Bandera Negra’, an album that is “a return to life”, as explained by their violinist, Carlos Prieto Guijarro, better known as Moha. He and Jesús Hernández, Txus di Fellatio, are the only remaining members of the original line-up, which was born in 1988.

The tour ‘Al abordaje!’ seems to be a bit of an accident because some concerts have had to be cancelled….

Yes, because both singers were sick at the same time. Patricia has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and Zeta has a very bad sciatica. They have been recommended to rest a lot and that is what forced us to stop. We have managed to save two concerts with the help of Rubén Kelsen from Debler, but we have had to cancel the one at Leyendas del Rock. Zeta is on medication and going to the physio every day, to see if he recovers and we can continue the tour, which everything points to yes.

What do you have planned for this Friday’s concert on Ibiza?

Zeta will go to Ibiza because he has been resting for ten days and going to the physio and he is recovering. Patricia will not have time, but Alba will come, who is a student of hers and sings very well.

What will the public on the island hear?

We will perform many songs from the latest album and also, obviously, Mägo de Oz classics such as ‘Fiesta pagana’ or ‘Molino de viento’. From ‘Bandera Negra’ we will perform seven or eight songs because we are not a band that arrives, releases an album and plays the single and that’s it. If we have recorded it, it is because we believe in it.

Will you bring any special scenery backdrops?

Right now in the concerts we are accompanied by a pirate ship and we are looking to see if we can take it to Ibiza.

Let’s talk about ‘Bandera Negra’. With this album a new stage begins because it is the first work with Víctor de Andrés and Manuel Seoane on guitars after the departure of Frank and Carlitos. In spite of the changes, can we say that the line-up is the same Mägo de Oz with a different skin?

You know what happens? Mägo de Oz has a brand, I mean, we have a sound from many years ago and although there are new additions we always respect the sound of the band. Andrés and Manuel Seoane, who have composed some songs on the last album, give it their touch, but it is still Mägo de Oz.

The album was forged in the middle of the pandemic…

Yes, we were locked up and we didn’t know what to do and we decided to record an album. The previous one is called ‘Ira dei’ and it talks about the apocalypse and we said: “We’ve clearly screwed up, let’s make an album that’s fun”, and what’s the most fun there is, the pirates? Via Zoom, each one at home, we were composing the songs. Each one recorded their part and sent it to the person who had the computer and the studio. Once we finished all the songs, when we could leave, we went into the studio to record.

How would you define Mägo de Oz’s work in a few words?

It’s a return to life. The pandemic has been crappy and in music we have been stopped for two years, without concerts, not only the musicians, but also the sound technicians, the loading and unloading, the drivers. We have been the last ones to come back and being able to play again has been like living again.
