Many hotel and catering outlets have been affected by a lack of qualified staff due to outbreaks of covid in the workforce. Because they have been unable to find replacements, they have been forced to close. This has been confirmed by representatives of the different employers’ associations in Ibiza.
Juan Olmos, president of the Ibiza Bars and Restaurants Association (ABRE), says that “due to the difficulty in finding staff, this year many businesses have been forced to close because they can’t provide a service when there is an infected person among its staff”.
The main problem, according to employers’ representatives, is that the islands have always depended on seasonal workers. “This year, as a result of the restrictions, the situation of uncertainty, the fear of unemployment and the cost of rent, many workers who used to come every season have not been able to, and we have been left with very few staff,” confirms Veronica Juan, president of the Bars and Restaurants Association of Ibiza and Formentera Small and Medium Business (Pimeef). For this reason, for years Pimeef has been calling for a catering school to be set up on Ibiza.
