Labor reform “has reduced” precariousness for women in the workplace

The 3rd 'Aulas feminists', inaugurated by the president of the Balearic Govern, addresses the 'Economy for equality'. Participants in the round table 'Analysis with a gender perspective of the labor reform' agree on its "positive effects" for women.

The labor reform approved at the beginning of this year is having “positive effects” for women in the field of equality, said the speakers yesterday who, at the first meeting of the 3rd ‘Aulas feministas‘, participated in the round table that analyzed, from a gender perspective, this substantial legislative change. Under the title ‘Economics for equality. The feminist agenda’, the meeting was inaugurated yesterday by the president of the Govern, Francina Armengol, who said that although there has been “significant progress” in equality in the workplace, warned that “there are still difficulties” to be dealt with.

Something that Armengol blames on the “patriarchy”: “A woman, to devote herself to politics or to a company or other work, must mortgage other things. It is a difference that is still real […] If women cannot start from the same position, it is difficult to break all the glass ceilings”, she says. As president of the Balearic Islands, she set herself some homework: “From the Administration we must remove the obstacles that prevent women from achieving all their aspirations. There is still a long way to go in the public and private spheres”.

The round table, moderated by Antònia Ferrer Juan (director of the Women’s Office of Ibiza) and entitled ‘Analysis with a gender perspective of the labor reform’, was opened by Iago Negueruela, Balearic Minister of Economic Model, Tourism and Labor, who indicated that although there have been profound changes in the regulatory framework to move towards equality, “there are still areas in which more progress must be made”. For example, “there is still a need for a real transformation in the workplace”.

He recalled that the first “big change” took place in 2007 with the Law of Equality in Companies, designed by the Ministry of Labor and, therefore, “with a labor perspective”. But even then, the councilor recalled, they detected that it contained “gaps” that prevented it from penetrating and permeating the business environment. Hence, “in recent years, the mandatory nature” of its implementation was introduced: “It is a fundamental piece that must start to roll”.
