Kata and Mustang are the two dogs that have joined the new canine unit of the Policía Local de Sant Antoni. Neus Mateu, Councillor for Governance and Environment; Javier Verdugo; chief inspector of the Policía Local de Sant Antoni and Alejandro Ponce, head of operations, have presented this unit formed by the two dogs and two police officers: David Torres and Roberto Sanchez.
As Mateu explained, the canine unit can be activated any day of the week and its main objective is the detection of narcotic substances. “With this reinforcement we have a more complete service for the municipality, as it will mean an advance in the work of surveillance and prevention in the tasks of control of drug trafficking and drug dealing, while we provide greater security to our agents in the current health situation as it will avoid searches,” said the councillor.
Mustang and Kata are the two dogs, Belgian Malinois shepherds, who will form part of this canine unit. Kata is a ten-year-old dog with whom the local police are training. On the other hand, Mustang, five years old, will be in charge of accompanying the officers at all times. This Belgian shepherd already has experience in drug detection work with police officers.

David Torres, one of the two officers assigned to the unit, explained his experience so far with the animals. “The dogs have to be accompanied at all times by a guide, because of the bond that is created as in the end they are animals, they are not machines. This bond is what will determine whether the dog can be effective at work. Therefore, it takes a lot of time training together and to go little by little”, has clarified the agent. To create this bond, the police officers explained that they have received theoretical and practical training to be able to put the unit into operation as soon as possible and try to get the maximum performance during this season.
