José Antonio Llano: “As Ibiza’s nightlife is closed, more parties appear”

AVAT calls for a regulatory change to deal with illegal parties.

Parties in tourist accommodation, a headache for the authorities but, above all, for the neighbours who have to endure them, have multiplied this year. “As nightlife is closed, more parties appear”, says José Antonio Llano, president of the Association of Tourist Housing and Accommodation (AVAT). Llano believes that there should be a change in regulations so that action can be taken when there is evidence that a party is being held in tourist accommodation.

The president of the group points out that “without a court order” state security forces and agencies cannot enter a house to break up an illegal party. In fact, last week the Govern and the Consell de Ibiza became embroiled in an argument about illegal parties. The Consell asked the Govern to change the regulations and the Govern responded to the Consell asking it to specify what changes it wanted and for these to be approved by the institution’s legal services.

The Balearic Consellera for the Presidency, Mercedes Garrido, also weighed in on this attempt to pass the buck on parties and illegal rentals, annoucing in Ibiza that the Govern will sanction  owners of tourist rentals who refuse to provide the details of the people to whom they have rented the houses where parties are held. If they fail to do so, said the Consellera, they will be subject to the same financial penalty as the organiser.
