The Fisheries inspection service of the Consell de Ibiza has carried out 206 inspections so far this year, which have resulted in a total of 29 illegal fishing infractions. Most of the inspections have focused on recreational fishing (99), followed by professional fishing (86) and the marketing of fishery products (21).

According to the maximum insular institution, “all the files for 2022 are being processed in accordance with the legislation in force and the areas of jurisdiction of the different administrations”.

Last year, this same department carried out 423 inspections, of which 42 sanctioning proceedings for illegal fishing were initiated. Most of the inspections, like this year, were focused on recreational fishing (269 controls) and professional fishing (119).

The rest corresponds to the transport of fishing products and first sale, marketing and correct labeling. The Consell specifies that these actions focused on points of sale (guilds and distributors), catering establishments and transport of fishery products.

Illegal fishing catches

Among the main inspections carried out in recreational fishing, the following stand out: the proceedings opened for fishing bluefin tuna outside the authorized period, the capture of undersized groupers and the capture of species not authorized for this type of fishing (royal Norway lobster).

Also noteworthy are the proceedings for non-compliance with fishing schedules, in the case of the professional fleet, and surface longline fishing in the area of inland waters of Ibiza and Formentera, where this modality is not permitted.
