“My partner and I started looking for a rental apartment when we decided to move in together,” says Marta (not her real name). This was in September 2020 and they didn’t find anything reasonable. “They were asking us for approximately 5,000 euros to rent an apartment that we would have to vacate in May,” she adds. “We found one or another for 2,000 euros, but with terrible conditions: old apartments, filthy facades and stairs. And not only that, but there were also requirements such as no pets or smoking, not bringing visitors, not having children…. Completely absurd after paying 2,000 euros a month rent for a hovel“, she complains.
Faced with this scenario, they decided to pack their bags and try their luck on the peninsula. “We left our jobs and our beautiful little island with much regret. We were looking for something for a whole year and we just wanted stability as a couple, as well as having a roof to sleep under without having to share it with strangers. You never know what can happen… I know people who have woken up with no suitcases, no money and even no papers for doing these things,” laments Marta.
They finally returned, but again without accommodation. “I was born here and we had no choice but to go to a warehouse and we have been living here ever since,” she explains. Logically, they are not comfortable and they live in fear that they will be kicked out and have to look for a place to stay again. “We don’t have a legal contract to be able to claim, for example, if we have leaks,” she stresses.
Unable to rent as a young person
This young 25 year old Ibizan, regrets that throught the time they have been looking for housing, they have not been taken seriously because they are young. “They thought we wouldn’t be able to pay, for example, 1,500 euros a month. I think everyone has been young at some point in their lives and wanted to live and become independent with their partner. It seems ridiculous to me that, today, we are taken as “ninis” (no work or studies) or as irresponsible for being young. What kind of world are we living in?”, she criticizes.
