Group of Ibiza taxi drivers demands the suspension of summer licenses

A Vila taxi association warns it is "reckless and imprudent" without prior island regulation

The Association of Professional Taxi Drivers of Vila, which is a minority, has filed a brief of allegations against the Sant Josep City Council’s new seasonal taxi licensing plan for the 2022-2023 period, in which it warns it is “imprudent and reckless” in the absence of “an island-wide regulation” to regulate it.

Without this island-wide regulation, seasonal taxi licences in Sant Josep would only be able to operate in their municipality “without being able to unload passengers in another”, according to the taxi drivers’ association.

The association recalls that the Balearic Island Law 4/2014 on land transport and sustainable mobility determines that “the competent body of the transport administration” must establish the legal regime of authorization at the autonomous or island level and that the discretionary transport of passengers in tourism of a temporary nature has to be governed by the provisions established by the competent bodies to issue the authorizations at the island level: the procedure for processing the permit, rights and obligations, the duration time and the amount of the fee, among others.

Next, this group of cab drivers recalls that the Consell Consultiu de Balears, in a 2016 opinion regarding the regulatory power of the island councils on cabs, stated that these institutions can control it by means of “a regulation”.
