Ibiza and Formentera on yellow alert for rainfall

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow alert for Ibiza and Formentera this Thursday, 30 October, due to the risk of locally heavy rainfall, with accumulations of up to 20 litres per square metre expected in one hour.

The warning will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the heaviest rainfall likely during the morning, when the probability of precipitation is forecast to reach 90%, according to Aemet.

The day will start with overcast skies and showers accompanied by thunderstorms, which are expected to ease in the afternoon, giving way to cloudy intervals and cooler temperatures. Maximum temperatures will hover around 23ºC, with minimums of around 18ºC. Winds will be light, from the north and northwest, with gusts of up to 10 kilometres per hour.

Overall, the heaviest downpours are expected between 6 a.m. and midday, while the chance of rain will gradually decrease throughout the afternoon, disappearing later in the day.

Anniversary of the DANA in Valencia

The activation of the alert coincides with the anniversary of the DANA (isolated high-altitude depression) in Valencia, which claimed the lives of 229 people on this same date a year ago.

Since 30 September, Ibiza has experienced three episodes of heavy rainfall (on 30 September, and 11 and 12 October), which flooded several areas of the island as well as major road infrastructures, including the airport road.
