From ‘Intimacy’ to ‘Water’, the essence of Ibiza is captured in all the tracks by Bart Sunshine, the island-based composer and pianist who has managed to break the 300,000 listener barrier on Spotify. This makes him one of the musicians from Ibiza who reaches the most people through digital platforms.
Bart Sunshine is the artistic-musical name of Bárbara Miguel, a therapist from Madrid who has been living on the island for years. She moved to Ibiza, she says, “to get to know the world”. What the Madrid-born therapist didn’t know is that on the Mediterranean island she would discover the inspiration that would make her share her music with the world. “I had always wanted to record my songs, but I had never done it. It was because of the pandemic that I decided to share my compositions with others and upload them to digital platforms,” she explains to Diario de Ibiza. So, as soon as he could, he recorded ‘Minves de gener’ in honor of the waters of Ibiza and Formentera.
The interest of other composers in Bart Sunshine began as soon as her songs were released. The composer and producer Jean-Paul Zoghbime invited her to participate in the album Hope, aimed at restoring hope to the world after the pandemic and in which a dozen great pianists of many nationalities participated. Bart did so with a song of hers entitled ‘Truth (es Vedrà)’.
Therapy, to which she dedicates a good part of her daily life, also inspires the composer from Madrid. “Sometimes, through what a patient’s body transmits to me in therapy, I get inspired to come up with a new theme. At other times I use my themes in session. It all comes together,” she says.
Bart Sunshine dreams big, and hopes that his rise on digital platforms is just the beginning of a long career. “It would be a dream for me to hear my songs as the soundtrack of a movie,” he confesses. For now, he is regularly uploading his compositions to Spotify, where you can currently find almost fifty of his songs. The latest is called ‘Saramago’, which has 50,000 plays because it has just been uploaded. Other songs, however, reach unusual heights, such as ‘Intimacy’ (2.7 million plays), ‘Flow’ (1.5 million), ‘Minves de gener’ (1.3 million), ‘La Cura de Lombao’ (1.3 million), ‘Insight’ (1.1 million) or ‘After The Rain’ (one million). In addition, this Friday, February 2, he premieres a new song, ‘Caresses’.
