The beach of Punta Xinxó in Sant Josep was closed to swimming on Thursday morning due to fecal spills. According to the City Council of Sant Josep in a note, the spill has occurred as a result of the failure in the sanitation system of Cala de Bou, which has caused a spill onto the shore that has reached the sea.
The pumps located in this section of the coastline that passes very close to the water, has been without electricity and this has facilitated the accumulation of sewage that have blown the sewer covers at two different points and also in the pumping house, explained municipal sources.
The “simultaneous leakage” in these three points has washed sand from the beach and has reached the sea, although it was only for a “short duration due to the quick reaction by the operators sanitation licensee”, indicated the Consistory.
Even so, the Department of Beaches and Coasts has ordered the preventitive closure of the beach to swimming and samples have been taken for laboratory analysis.

The City Council has hoisted the red flag prohibiting bathing and has cordoned off access to the water throughout this section with police tape.
The analysis of the bathing water will be repeated today (Friday) to confirm if the beach is within the parameters of health and can be reopened to swimmers.
The sewage pipes of Cala de Bou register problems “relatively frequently due to the poor state of the pipes and the proximity to the sea”, explained the City Council, which has pointed out that “renewing and removing the sewage from the public domain is one of the main environmental actions included in the project of transformation of the bay of Portmany initiated by Sant Josep with the City Council of Sant Antoni and with funding from the Sustainable Tourism Tax of the Balearic Govern”.
