The latest edition of the Balearic honey competition was held last Saturday for the first time outside Eivissa, where the beekeepers association that has so far organized it is based: it took place in Llubí (Mallorca), where the jury had to choose between 68 varieties (10 less than in 2020) the best of the late season (which corresponded to the Ibizan Vicente Juan Ferrer), original (of the Mallorcan Pilar Puig Fortuny), and spring (collected by Juan Barber Rotger, Menorca).
31 beekeepers took part in the competition (18 from Mallorca, 4 from Menorca, 7from Eivissa and 2 from Formentera), who submitted a total of 32 spring honeys, 20 original honeys and 16 late honeys. The beekeepers from Formentera only sent original honeys and those from Menorca did not send any late honeys. Beekeepers could only submit one sample of honey per category, harvested and bottled strictly on the Balearic Islands. The honeys had to look good, the jars had to be full and the humidity had to be equal to or less than 18.5%. Those that did not meet these requirements were withdrawn from the competition.
