Holy Week in Ibiza: past and present in La Borriquita

On Palm Sunday, the town of Ibiza came alive with the traditional procession of La Borriquita, attracting both residents and early-season tourists. The event, which symbolizes Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, commenced at 11 a.m. from Cathedral Square, proceeding to the Santo Domingo church. The procession was led by the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of the Cemetery and featured the Ibiza Yacente Musical Group, highlighting the community’s deep-rooted participation in Holy Week celebrations. Among the participants were Marina Cardona and Maria Loayza, the youngest bearers of the procession’s image, emphasizing the generational renewal sustaining these traditions. This year introduced a challenging new route, descending through the narrow and steep streets of the old city, demanding coordination and effort from the 14 members of the brotherhood. The procession, enriched with music and the blessing of palms and olive branches by Bishop Vicent Ribas, underscored the faith and cultural heritage of Ibiza, while also hinting at the ongoing need for younger generations to preserve these longstanding customs.
