The Ibiza fire brigade had to rescue the occupants of a top-of-the-range convertible car, a Toyota Eclipse, this evening. The car had gone off the Sant Antoni road (EI700), past Sant Agustรญ, at kilometre 17, and was totally destroyed after falling down a five-metre drop.
The vehicle, for reasons unknown, has been left embedded in the bed of a torrent and, in spite of the seriousness of the accident, only one of its occupants was injured to varying degrees specifically an arm and a wrist.
Firefighters received a call alerting them to the incident at 21.05 hours. Five firefighters and a heavy fire truck were dispatched to the scene.
Fire hazard
According to sources from the operation, the rescue was very laborious and the firefighters, in addition to taking care of the injured, had to secure the area, surrounded by forest, in order to to avoid a fire since there has been a fuel spill when the tank of the car broke. In fact, they had to insulate the car with foam and removed the battery to prevent short circuits and risk of fire.
Two roadside assistance teams of Grรบas Ibiza have been in charge of recovering the car after a laborious work on the part of the firemen, since it was in surrounded by power lineswhich made their work difficult.
While the work of rescuing the car was being carried out, agents of the Guardia Civil regulated the traffic because it was necessary to remove pieces of the vehicle that were scattered on the road.
The accident was so violent that the reinforcements of the convertible were crushed on the front seats. Firefighters concluded the service at 23.56 hours, so the rescue of the car lasted at least three hours.
