Fentanyl: the unexpected ‘zombie apocalypse’ in Ibiza

Agents of the Local Police of Sant Josep receive training to identify the symptoms caused by the overdose of this drug and to be able to act in these situations that have not yet occurred on the island

In response to the potential threat of fentanyl, a powerful opioid, reaching Ibiza, the Sant Josep Town Hall organized a workshop aimed at equipping local police with the skills to recognize and respond to fentanyl overdoses. José Antonio Granados, head of the Sant Josep Local Police, expressed that while the situation in Ibiza is not expected to mirror the severe addiction problems seen in the United States, it’s crucial to be prepared for any eventualities, including the possibility of fentanyl mixed with other substances. The workshop, led by Daniel Ausín, health director of the Ibiza Nurse Service, sought to debunk myths about fentanyl exposure and educate officers on the distinct symptoms of overdoses from various drugs, highlighting the unique challenges posed by fentanyl. Ausín emphasized the importance of distinguishing between different drug effects, such as the hypothermia caused by fentanyl versus the hyperthermia from MDMA. The training also covered the use of naloxone, an opioid antagonist that can reverse fentanyl-induced respiratory arrest, noting its restricted availability in Europe. Despite the low incidence of illegal fentanyl use in Europe, the initiative reflects a proactive approach to drug education and safety in Ibiza.
