Urban dance against cancer on Ibiza

Some thirty young people attended the last day of New Moves, an initiative that, in addition to promoting the love of dance, donates the proceeds from registration fees to charity, this year to the Spanish Association of Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Dance and solidarity come together in New Moves, an urban dance workshop that, since 2019, two young portmanyins of 23 and 22 years old, Ana García and Carlos Hortensius, organize within the program of the festivities of Sant Bartomeu. They have the support of the Sant Antoni City Council.

The third year, which closed yesterday in the sports center of ses Païsses, has extended its duration with respect to 2021 from one to two days and has been able to be held without any restrictions. “Last year, with the pandemic present, it was still noticeable that there was fear to participate in events, but this year the response has been very good,” said Hortensius minutes before the start of the last day, which was attended by about thirty children and teenagers.

Dance for charity

As usual, the proceeds from class registrations will go entirely to charity, specifically this year, to the Spanish Association of Metastatic Breast Cancer. In addition, as in previous years, participants each donated a kilo of non-perishable food to be delivered to Caritas.

The lineup of teachers of New Moves 2022 was integrated by Ana Garcia herself and three other urban dance professionals, Victor Hugo, Caro BM and Sarah Coral. The two workshops yesterday, one with “more commercial” choreography and the other more “new style” were given by the founder of this workshop and the Barcelona dancer and choreographer Sarah Coral.

The classes were attended by many dance students from the island, such as Carla, eleven years old, who had never before participated in New Moves. Neither had thirteen-year-old Leonor, who didn’t miss a single class in this third year. “I loved the workshops,” said the young girl from Sant Antoni yesterday who has been learning urban and contemporary dance for two years.

“The feedback from both students and teachers has been very good,” said Hortensius, who this year has not served as a teacher, but as a student, at least yesterday in the class of Ana Garcia.
