Why is the cathedral of Ibiza closed?

Ibiza Cathedral is currently closed due to building work. A situation that began on the 1st of November, according to the Bishopric of Ibiza in a statement, in which it points out that “various restoration works” are being carried out.

“Specifically the stained glass windows of the ambulatory will be repaired which for various reasons were damaged,” reports the Bishopric, which adds that also “will intervene in the choir stalls and the organ, as well as in several side altars that were affected by woodworm”. In the same way, the restoration works include painting the walls of the temple.

“Urgent” intervention

The work is not concentrated in the interior. Work will also be carried out on the exterior: “It is planned to repair the buttresses that have deteriorated due to the passage of time, urgently needing intervention”.

The work will take a few months. They are expected to be finished by the end of March. The intention of the Bishopric is that the Cathedral can reopen to host Holy Week celebrations “normally”.

During the time that the Cathedral is closed for worship, all the activity of this temple will be transferred to the parish of San Pedro, better known as El Convent.
