Carnival in Ibiza: La Rúa de Sant Joan fuses ‘ball pagès’ with ‘batucada’

The union of Brazilian percussion with the 'castanyoles' triumphs in the rúa and wins the prize for the best float

The Sant Joan procession, a distinctive feature of the local festivities, allows for last-minute registrations, leading to uncertainty about participant numbers until the event’s commencement. This year, despite concerns from the Festivities Commission President, Iñaki de Eróstegui, due to a schedule change by the Ibiza city Carnival, the turnout exceeded expectations. The event was highlighted by the performance of Percusión a Tutiplén, a group known for their batucada rhythms, who this year introduced a mix of Brazilian and traditional Ibizan music, winning the first prize for the best float. The procession also featured various groups and individuals dressed in creative costumes, including themes of climate change, local humor, and inclusivity. The event concluded with communal festivities offering local delicacies, showcasing the town’s vibrant community spirit and cultural heritage.
