Bread, wine, and oil tastings and talks revive at the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza

The new edition of MAEF's 'Mediterranean Triad' takes place from June 2 to 16

The Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera and the Vila Town Hall are organising the third edition of the ‘Mediterranean Triad; Bread, oil and wine in ancient Ibiza’, which this year will take place between the 2nd and 16th of June, and will once again bring together local producers and specialists in the study of these three fundamental products of our gastronomic past at the necropolis of Puig des Molins. This year, moreover, the cycle forms part of the activities organised within the framework of the European Archaeology Days 2023, an initiative of the Ministry of Culture of the French Government, in which Spanish institutions managing archaeological sites such as the MAEF also participate, under the coordination of the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage and Fine Arts.

Start of summer

Already established as an annual appointment at the beginning of summer, this project, the result of collaboration between the town hall of Ibiza, the museum and Sabors d’Ibiza, was born in 2021 to create a space of connection between the archaeological and gastronomic heritage of the island. The activity consists of combining playful lectures on the history of bread, oil and wine in ancient times with the tasting of products by local producers: ovens offering xeixa bread, wine cellars and producers of oil with PGI (Protected Geographical Indication).

As a result of the public success of the first two editions (about 800 people), the project repeats formula renewing the speakers in charge of giving the lectures. The cycle opens on June 2 with the Day of the Oil by Isabel Bonora Andรบjar (curator of the Louvre Museum), with a conference entitled ‘Of olive presses and olive oil mills. Olive oil in the Iberian Peninsula through archaeology’.

Next, bread Day, June 9will be given by Maria Bofill Martรญnez (MAEF curator), with the lecture ‘Arrive and kiss the saint! The archaeological study of bread since prehistoric times’. Finally, the cycle closes with the Wine Day, on June 16, by the archaeologists Elise Marliรจre and Josep Torres Costa, with the conference ‘From the field to the glass. The vine and wine in Punic and Roman Ibiza’.

The cycle is held again in the necropolis of Puig des Molins, located at Via Romana, 31, Ibiza, from 20 to 21.30 hours. Access is free, and places must be reserved by calling 971 176 090 from the Monday before each conference.
