An average of one hundred boats anchor daily in the bay of Sant Antoni this summer

According to information gathered by the Salvem sa Badia de Portmany volunteer crew, 105 of the 195 vessels checked between July 27 and August 25 had anchored on Posidonia

There was an average of more than one hundred boats anchored daily in the bay of Portmany between 27 July and 25 August, reported Salvem Sa Badia de Portmany yesterday through a statement. This is the outcome of the initiative #EstimSaBadia, carried out by the team Es Voluntaris of the association, composed of ten young people and coordinated by biologists Elisa Langley and Marta Fernandez.

In total, these volunteers have provided information on the ecosystem of the bay’s environment to 195 recreational boat skippers, to whom they gave the map of the presence of a marine plant published by Salvem Sa Badia de Portmany, as 105 were anchored over meadows of this protected marine plant. In these cases, they say in the statement, “it was verified by means of sonar and with the app Posidonia of the Govern de les Illes Balears, taking their data and communicating their position”.

Of the 195 boats, 142 knew what posidonia is, but only 37 were aware of the Govern’s application that indicates its location on the seabed. “In general, whenever the skipper of these vessels has been informed of their incorrect position and the existing resources to avoid it, the crew has been grateful and have changed their anchoring place or have asked for help to find a sandbank on which to anchor,” explained the conservationist platform.

A daily count of the number of boats anchoring between Cala Gració-Cap Blanc and Port des Torrent has also been carried out.
