As expected according to the funerary traditions of ancient Rome, archaeologists have discovered ashes in the 2000 year old mausoleum that has come to light during the renovation of Avenida de Isidor Macabich, at the level of the parque de La Paz. Experts point out that it is very likely that these remains belong to the Roman man in memory of whom this funerary monument was erected.

Archaeologists explain that at that time the Romans did not bury their dead, they burned them. But they did not incinerate because they did not have the technique for the complete combustion of the organic matter until its conversion into ashes. That is why it is possible that among the remains found now, mixed with clay, there could be some remains of bone material that would allow a forensic examination.

As already published in Diario de Ibiza, the remains of pottery and other objects found have allowed the dating of this mausoleum to the first century A.D., when the Roman Empire completed the domination of southern and western Europe, North Africa and the Mediterranean Levant.

Archaeologists will extract to stone base to be moved

The municipal government team value this discovery. They want to preserve it. The idea is for archaeologists to extract this enormous stone base to move it to a more visible place. And ideally, says the City Council, it will be museumized “in the parque de La Paz, to be in the immediate vicinity of the discovery”.
