Although there is still not much official information about the fatal boat accident that took place early this morning, Diario de Ibiza has been able to confirm that the boat that crashed in a rocky area of Caló de s’Oli in Formentera was occupied by the participants of a regatta.
According to sources of the investigation, the members of the regatta in the boat accident went out with the inflatable boat ‘Elvis’ to check the sea conditions for the competition when the accident occurred.
The communication office of the Guardia Civil confirmed this morning that they have ruled out both drug trafficking and immigration.
The boat involved in the crash had been rented in an establishment on Ibiza.
A 48 year old man of Dutch nationality has suffered a serious polytrauma and had to be evacuated by helicopter to Can Misses Hospital, where he will undergo surgery, as confirmed by the Health Department of Ibiza and Formentera.
The other four injured passengers, also of Dutch nationality and aged between 24 and 41, have been transferred to the Formentera Hospital. Three of them have been slightly injured, while the fourth, a 39-year-old man, is being evaluated by the Traumatology Service for an upper extremity trauma, according to the data provided by the Health Department.
The details of the boat accident
The events occurred at around 3:45am, when the 061 received the notice. Shortly after, around 4:15am, firefighters were notified and three personnel were on the scene to assist in the rescue, as explained by the Consell de Formentera. With a spinal board they pulled one of the injured out of the water and “collaborated with the evacuation and support of the other victims,” added the island government.
The Capitanía Marítima warns that “we must be prudent” and wait for the judicial investigation to clarify what happened.
Although initially it had been reported that the events occurred in Punta Gavina, the collision of the boat against the rocks has occurred in es Caló de s’Oli.
