A very average year: not as bad as feared and not as good as 2019. But the tourism sector has a good thing going after the disaster of 2020. This is the message conveyed by José María Ramón, CEO of the booking engine Neobookings (which manages more than 60% of the hotel offering in the Pitiusas) during his talk ‘Strategy 2022’, in which he essentially analysed how the current season has gone.
Ordinary, because although it has far exceeded that of 2020, 44% fewer nights were booked than in 2019, according to his calculations. “It’s bad data. And that’s because many haven’t opened. But it hasn’t been that bad. At least it’s not 2020,” Ramon said. And at least it has been, in the end, “a season of almost three months”. Ramon confessed that on 20th August it was not at all clear if there would be tourists in September. But there were. The reason: “People have booked very last minute. But in the end we have scraped a little more (…) It has changed how they book with us. In July and August bookings came in less than seven days before”.
September was well rounded: it accounted for 23.9% of bookings this year, more than July (23.1%). August triumphed, as always: 29.9%
September was round: it had 23.9% of this year’s bookings, more than July (23.1%). August triumphed, as usual: 29,9%. At the same time, “the advance booking significantly decreased: from 68 days in 2019 to 36 days in 2021”. This is a change in the shopping model that, according to the CEO of Neobookings, “should be taken into account for 2022” because it is possible that it has taken hold with customers.
