The Guardia Civil recorded 312 positive tests over the Hispanic Day holiday weekend and completed its special traffic operation without any serious road accidents.
The Guardia Civil has concluded a special traffic operation in Ibiza during the major nightclub closing parties, known locally as closings, after reporting 312 drivers for testing positive for alcohol or drugs.
The operation, carried out by the Balearic Islands Traffic Division, remained in place throughout the Hispanic Day holiday weekend, coinciding with one of the busiest periods for visitors towards the end of Ibiza’s tourist season, according to a statement from the force.
Checks were concentrated on major roads and routes leading to nightlife areas, with the aim of identifying dangerous behaviour and keeping drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs off the road.
The Guardia Civil said the additional checkpoints enabled officers to remove more than 300 potentially dangerous drivers from traffic, helping protect other road users during a particularly busy weekend on the island.
Seven drivers investigated or arrested over road safety offences
Alongside administrative penalties, the operation also resulted in criminal proceedings. Seven drivers were investigated or arrested in connection with road safety offences, the Guardia Civil reported.
Two were investigated after recording blood alcohol levels high enough to constitute a criminal offence, while another four were investigated for driving without a valid licence.
A further driver was arrested after allegedly attempting to evade a drink-driving checkpoint, fleeing in a reckless manner and subsequently putting up strong resistance when officers caught up with him.
No serious road accidents reported
The Guardia Civil highlighted what it described as the operation’s main achievement: no serious road accidents were recorded during the busiest period of the club closing parties.
The force said the additional deployment was intended to serve both as an enforcement measure and as a deterrent during days marked by heavy traffic between Ibiza’s nightlife venues and other parts of the island.
Traffic officers also reminded drivers that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can lead to prison sentences, fines and the loss of a driving licence, depending on the circumstances and severity of the offence.
