Residents, businesses and other interested parties have until 11 November to comment on plans for a temporary waste management facility at es Cap de Barbaria while the permanent plant is being built.

The Formentera Island Council (Consell de Formentera) has opened a public consultation on the rules governing the collection, reception, sorting, recovery and management of construction and demolition waste on the island. Residents and relevant industry stakeholders have until 11 November 2026 to submit suggestions and feedback before the regulations are drafted.

Approved by the Council’s Governing Board on 16 October, the initiative aims to establish the operating conditions for a temporary construction waste management facility at es Cap de Barbaria. The site will provide an interim service while the planned permanent facility is being built and brought into operation.

The temporary facility will receive, sort and monitor waste generated by building works and demolitions across Formentera. It will also organise the waste’s subsequent treatment through authorised facilities.

Through the new regulations, the island council aims to strengthen waste monitoring and traceability, encourage waste separation and recovery, and clearly define the responsibilities of both service users and those managing the facility.

How to take part in Formentera’s public consultation

The consultation period will remain open for 15 working days, from 22 October to 11 November 2026, inclusive.

Individuals, businesses and organisations wishing to contribute can submit their views and proposals in person through the registration office at the Citizen Service Office (OAC), or online via the Virtual Citizen Service Office (OVAC).

Documents relating to the initiative, together with access to the online submission process, will be available on the official Formentera Island Council website.
