The Spanish tourist on Ibiza has been the most ‘low budget’ in the last 5 years

The data published by Ibestat show that national tourists have, on average, dedicated less budget to their trip to Ibiza and Formentera, but have also remained more loyal to the islands.

Tourists from other parts of Spain spend the least amount of money per person during their stay on Ibiza and Formentera. Despite this, the income per person corresponding to Spanish travelers remained stable throughout the period, unlike what happened with their foreign counterparts, according to data published by the Balearic Institute of Statistics (Ibestat).

If we break down the international tourism data by country, it shows that most of the pandemic decline in spending is attributable to those travelers who did not travel from either the United Kingdom or Germany. Thus, people of these nationalities hardly reduced the average amount they spent on their stays in Ibiza and Formentera. However, this drop has been compensated in the following years with an almost instantaneous return to 2019 levels.

Spending per person per day

The trend is confirmed in the data provided by Ibestat when it comes to spending per person and per day. Therefore, it is once again shown that Spanish tourists in recent years have been far from the consumption levels of those coming from other countries, but were hardly affected by the pandemic. However, the general recovery in the first half of 2022 is being led by an increase in the budget that each Spaniard devotes daily to their stay in the Pitiusas.

However, the figures for budget per person per day for foreign visitors were not affected by the situation triggered by covid-19. This may be due to a change in the spending pattern of this type of traveler, according to which they chose to spend less time on Ibiza and Formentera, although with the same daily outlay.

Total tourist expenditure

From a general point of view, the total tourist income originated by Spanish travelers was much lower than that derived from foreign visitors during the years of the data period. Taking into account that the differences in spending per head are not so large, this fact could be explained by the fact that the number of foreign travelers coming to the Pitiusas is much higher than that of nationals.
