Sant Josep to renew access to Cala Vedella beach from the southern area

The section to be improved by the Sant Josep City Council, which is more than 500 meters long, lacks lighting and has practically no sidewalks.

The City Council of Sant Josep plans to start the renovation of calle Pollença, one of the main roads at Cala Vedella that links the southern part of this tourist center with the beach, from October or November. The main objective is to provide the road with a pedestrian walkway to provide a safe passage for pedestrians, public lighting and street furniture, as well as to improve the drainage of rainwater and the water supply network.

On Tuesday, the Butlletí Oficial de les Illes Balears (BOIB) published the initial approval of this project, drafted by the architect Adrián Gabarain Inda, which now remains on public exhibition until June 1st. The documentation details that the execution period of these works is four months and has a budget of 582,276 euros.

Calle Pollença descends from the hill that closes Cala Vedella to the south and currently there is not lighting or street furniture for more than 500 meters. On one side of the road there are some precarious concrete platforms and it is very narrow with no continuity in the sidewalks.

Obsolete planning says Sant Josep’s Mayor

“It is an area that was developed through any means with partial planning,” lamented the mayor of Sant Josep, Angel Luis Guerrero yesterday. “So we have to invest in this area so that it does not continue to degrade,” he added.

The project includes enabling a 2.10 meter wide pedestrian walkway next to the road, which will maintain its two lanes at 6 meters wide. To provide greater safety for pedestrians, a railing will separate the road and the sidewalk.

The street lighting will consist of 23 streetlights with LED lights, seven pergolas will be installed that are three meters high and two meters wide, with benches and planters with climbing plants, as detailed in the project execution report.

In addition, along the street there will be five rubbish bins in the busiest areas and signage at the various pedestrian crossings.

Unlike in other comprehensive renovations of streets with similar characteristics, it will not be necessary to renew the sewage network in this case as it has PVC pipes in good condition. On the other hand, the road does not have a rainwater drainage network, except at a single point at the junction with Calle de la Carrasca, in the flat area next to the beach.
