3 million euros to repair damage caused by the dana to torrents and water infrastructures in Ibiza

The damage caused by the two danas that hit Ibiza on 30 September and on 11 and 12 October has required an investment of three million euros to repair the impact both on the torrents and on the island’s water supply and sanitation systems. The Balearic Government, which carried out all these works as an emergency, stressed that it had been possible to restore “in the shortest possible time, hydraulic safety, drainage capacity and the operation of essential infrastructure on the island”, according to the Minister of the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente.

Lafuente detailed on Monday all the actions taken by his ministry after the floods in Ibiza. He was accompanied by the manager of the public company Abaqua —which manages the wastewater treatment and desalination plants in the Balearic Islands— Emeterio Moles, as well as the president of the Consell, Vicent Marí, and several municipal representatives. The regional investment to repair the damage amounts to 2.96 million euros, of which 1.7 million euros correspond to the adaptation of the torrents, another one million to sanitation facilities, and the remainder to a water pipeline from the Santa Eulària desalination plant.

Lafuente highlighted that the restoration of the torrents had been carried out “in record time” and that this work “reduces the risks ahead of new episodes of heavy rainfall”. Asked about the likely increase in future danas, as warned by meteorologists, the minister recalled that the Government has tripled this year’s regular allocation for cleaning and maintaining these channels, bringing the total to 17 million euros across the Balearic Islands.
