Rain arrives to Ibiza and Formentera this weekend

The State Meteorological Agency foresees a change in the weather in the Pitiusas from this Sunday onwards

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has announced a change of weather in the Pitiusas. From Sunday 15th onwards the first precipitations of October could appear.

Both Ibiza and Formentera are located in yellow warning for heavy rainfall. The probability of rainfall is 75% for this Sunday, while during the coming week the probability of rainfall in Ibiza and Formentera is around 80%.

Temperatures will not drop too much. In the early hours of Saturday morning, the thermometers have marked 15 degrees in Sant Joan17 in the Ibiza airport area and 19 in Formentera.

Rain throughout Spain

Although this weekend the rains have already made their appearance rains in some parts of Spain, this change of weather will consolidate in the coming days. At last the expected waters that should help to fill the reservoirs will appear and to alleviate the drought that the countryside is suffering. Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 will be the days when, for the moment, more precipitation is expected.

“Changes in the weather are coming,” said Ruben Del Campo, spokesman for AEMET, who explains that the presence of a powerful anticyclone in northern Europe will block the next few days the passage of the squalls in those latitudes, favoring their arrival in Spain leaving “widespread and abundant rains”.

These squalls will also drive the arrival of the so-called “atmospheric rivers”these are narrow and very elongated areas of the atmosphere that sometimes originate in the Caribbean and, on their long journey over the Atlantic towards the peninsula, are loaded with humidity, giving rise to abundant rainfall in our country.

Spain will be “benefited” by the abundant rains, Del Campo said, who has clarified that until next Friday could exceed 100 liters per square meter in Galicia, environment of the western Central system, southwest of Andalusia and points of the Aragonese Pyrenees.

Between 50 and 100 liters per square meter in the center, Extremadura south of Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia, while in the extreme southeast is likely not to reach 10 or 15 liters per square meter.

Autumn temperatures

In general, -has clarified the spokesman of Aemet- temperatures will drop, favoring an autumn environmentwith values more typical of this time of the year, except in the Canary Islands, where the weekend is still expected to be “very hot”.

In fact, the arrival of a ‘squall train’the first of which will arrive this Sunday, the 15th, accompanied by an atmospheric river. The northwest peninsular will be where the rains will be more abundant this Sunday.

Already for the monday 16 the rains will reach the northeast of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, and there will be other more scattered precipitations in the central peninsular strip, according to Marta Almarcha in eltiempo.es.

During this day the arrival of the second Atlantic squall is expected. The core of the squall could be located off the coast of Portugal and the rains would affect the entire peninsular Atlantic slope. The squall would reach land at the end of the day and precipitation could intensify during the early hours of Tuesday morningthe rainfall could intensify during the early hours of Tuesday morning[]adding extra moisture from the atmospheric river.

The tuesday morning, the rains will already be practically generalized throughout the country, with the squall moving northeastward.

The wednesday showers will still persist, especially in the western half and in the afternoon, also in the northeast.

Almarcha adds that for the thursday the arrival of another squall is expecteda, this one coming from higher latitudes, which would bring new rains.
