Health department opts for overtime to reduce surgical waiting list in Ibiza

The surgical waiting list at Can Misses Hospital has grown significantly since April this year. At present, there are 2,304 patients awaiting surgery — a 27.7% increase compared to April (1,804). Of these, 850 have been waiting for more than three months. The average waiting time from the moment a patient is informed they require surgery until they receive a date for the operation is now almost 150 days.

In this regard, the Regional Minister of Health, Manuela García Romero, explained that “management contracts are being negotiated with the different surgical departments to reduce waiting lists through extraordinary activity”. In other words, medical staff will be compensated for working overtime.

García acknowledged that waiting lists in Ibiza still need improvement — both for initial specialist consultations and for surgical procedures. However, she pointed to what she described as “a positive development” compared to when the current government took office two years ago: “When we arrived, on 23 June 2023, the average waiting time for a surgical operation was 170 days. So now, citizens in Ibiza wait about a month less than when we arrived”.

In reality, the reduction is closer to 20 days — not even three weeks.
