Offensive in Ibiza to reduce waste

The Alianza Residuo Cero Ibiza y Formentera, which brings together environmental organisations from both islands, closed 2025 by strengthening its role as “a space for technical coordination and dialogue with public administrations on waste prevention and reduction”. In a statement, the collective recalls that it is working to make Ibiza and Formentera “one of the top ten zero-waste islands in the Mediterranean by 2030″ and is already preparing new initiatives for the coming year.

These include a study trip to learn from “the experience of another island territory that has already reduced its waste”, an initiative in which member organisations will take part and which “several public institutions have shown interest in joining as part of this learning process”.

Looking ahead to 2026, the alliance also aims to “contribute its knowledge and learning space to collaborate with the island-wide Shock Plan for waste reduction announced by the administrations at the last Council of Mayors”.

As the organisation itself explains, its role focuses on “facilitating shared criteria, a common language and learning spaces around what it means to move towards zero waste in island territories such as Ibiza and Formentera, and under what conditions this can realistically be achieved”.

One of the milestones of 2025, the alliance notes, was the technical workshop Cap a unes illes residu zero, held in November. The event brought together technical and political representatives from local councils, island institutions and the Balearic Government, along with member entities of the alliance. The workshop was conceived as “a space for technical work and exchange” and was described by participants as “relevant and useful”, who also expressed “their intention to continue being part of it”.

These meetings aim to “facilitate an informed discussion on waste prevention and reduction, connecting the local context with experiences from other island territories that have made progress towards zero-waste objectives”.

Collective impact in Ibiza and Formentera

In addition, the alliance has, for the first time, compiled collective impact data from actions independently promoted by its member organisations but “aligned with shared objectives of waste prevention and reduction”. Aggregated results for 2025 in the Pitiusas include the collection of 3.8 tonnes of waste in natural areas — “approximately 76% of it plastic” — the management of 240 tonnes of bulky and textile waste, the elimination of more than 2,000 single-use cups at events, and the participation of more than 870 people in clean-up activities.

In this context, the alliance recalls that in December 2025 the Council of Mayors “publicly acknowledged the need to reduce waste generation” and announced the launch of work towards an island-wide Shock Plan for waste reduction. The organisation welcomes this institutional recognition and “offers its technical expertise to collaborate”.

Learning from other islands

The project Cap a unes illes residu zero aims to “learn directly from island experiences that have already made progress in waste reduction”. Among the territories being analysed are Krk (Croatia) and Sardinia (Italy).

The purpose of the visit is “to understand which measures have worked, under what conditions and with what limitations”, and to transfer these lessons to the Pitiusan context “through a technical recommendations document”. The project is promoted by (Ma) Laboratorio de Transformación Sostenible in collaboration with Plastic Free: Alianza Residuo Cero Ibiza y Formentera, and is made possible thanks to funding from the BeMed Foundation and IbizaPreservation.

This initiative forms part of Plastic Free’s Vision 2030: Alianza Residuo Cero Ibiza y Formentera, which aims for the Pitiusas to be “among the first ten islands in the Mediterranean certified as zero waste”, a strategy led by the alliance’s member organisations.
