IbizaPreservation presents plan for environmental challenges

The environmental foundation IbizaPreservation has made public its Action Plan 2025, which they define as “an ambitious initiative that seeks to address the main environmental challenges of Ibiza and Formentera through concrete actions aimed at the protection and sustainability of the natural environment”.

In a statement, it explains that this plan, which “includes a specific provision to expand activities in the Lesser Pitiusa, has a specific budget for projects close to 700,000 euros and includes innovative measures in its five strategic programs: biodiversity, local production, circular economy, marine environment and the Sustainability Observatory.”

“The 2025 Action Plan is the result of an exhaustive process of analysis and collaboration with experts, institutions and local communitieswhich has allowed us to identify the most urgent priorities in terms of sustainability,” explains Inma Saranova, director of IbizaPreservation.

Among the novelties of this year, the foundation highlights “the launching of Formentera Produce”, a project that, they point out, “follows the path of the already consolidated Ibiza Produce program”. This new initiative contemplates the development of the project Eivissa & Formentera Sembren Futur, “that will facilitate the planting of 1,000 trees on farms to regenerate soils and landscapes,” they point out.

IbizaPreservation also announces a Sembra Futur Forum for this year,an initiative, they say, “aimed at young people that seeks to encourage interest in professional careers linked to the rural sector”.

They also highlight the impulse of “a new biosafety protocoldeveloped by Cofib (the Consortium for the Recovery of Balearic Fauna) thanks to a participatory process led by IbizaPreservation in 2023 with key entities”. The objective is to “avoid the translocation of snakes between Ibiza and Formentera through prevention and early eradication strategies in the port of La Savina”.

Protecting the native lizard

Precisely on the “protection of local biodiversity”, IbizaPreservation indicates that it “will carry out the expansion of the project ‘Protegim Ses Sargantanes’, which seeks to prevent the extinction of the Pitiusa lizard through the installation of snake traps both in protected areas and on agricultural estates”.

As part of “this reinforcement”, they announce, “an initiative will be launched to create a mouse breeding nucleus that guarantees the necessary supply of live bait. In addition, community awareness activities will be developed through educational workshops and teaching materials.”

“Circular economy also features prominently in this year’s plan. Therefore, IbizaPreservation will carry out a joint project with its sister entities, Mallorca Preservation and Menorca Preservation, called Tejiendo futuro: Alianza para la Preservación de Baleares, a new initiative that will address the problem of marine litter through a pioneering study on the state of the seabed in the Balearic Islands”.

This project, they detail, also contemplates the creation of “a circular crafts network which will seek to transform recycled materials into unique products, promoting a more sustainable economic model”. In addition, the children’s show “The Magic of Recycling, which promotes recycling awareness, will be expanded for the first time to Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca.

Another of the novelties within the Circular Economy program is the development of a pilot project for shared energy consumption, an innovative initiative that will seek to optimize energy resources and promote a more sustainable use of energy on the islands, they point out.

Consolidated projects

Within the 2025 Action Plan, IbizaPreservation announces that it will reinforce “its commitment to already consolidated projects such as Plastic Free: Alianza Residuo Cero Ibiza y Formentera, which promotes the elimination of single-use plastics, and Kilometers of Plastic by Iris, which involves young people in cleanup and environmental awareness activities.”

“In the field of circular economy, it will also continue to promote projects such as Zero Waste Chefs EU, funded by the European Erasmus program, and Gastronomic Activists, through workshops that promote the fight against food waste.”

Another of the projects to be expanded in 2025 is Butterflies for biodiversityinitiated at the end of 2024 as part of Ibiza Produce”. This initiative, they recall, “is focused on the protection of essential pollinatorssuch as butterflies, through habitat enhancement and resource optimization, playing a fundamental role in environmental conservation”.

Regarding the marine environment, IbizaPreservation will continue the annual monitoring of the Posidonia oceanica meadows at different points along the coast of Ibiza, “as well as a study to shed light on the populations of sharks and rays in the Pitiusas waters, both carried out by GEN-GOB”. It will also continue to promote the Calant Xarxes Alliance, which works to improve the sustainability of Balearic fisheries.

“Likewise, in the line of dissemination and research, the organization will continue to be an active part of the promoting team of the Marine Forum of Ibiza and Formenterawhich this year will celebrate its seventh edition, consolidating itself as a key space for reflection and action in favor of the environment,” they add in their statement.

Saranova assures that “the 2025 Action Plan combines science, innovation and citizen participation to ensure the preservation of the natural environment of Ibiza and Formentera”. “Our mission,” he adds, “is to continue contributing to lay the foundations of a sustainable development model that protects our natural heritage and ensures a healthy future for the next generations,” he remarks.
