The Ibiza Town Council has sent “a clear message” to those living in illegal settlements within the municipality — or planning to do so again in the coming summer season: “They must understand that this institution will neither normalise nor allow settlements as a way of life”, warned Mayor Rafael Triguero during Wednesday’s debate on the state of the municipality.
Triguero identified housing as “the major challenge defining this term of office” and acknowledged that “the problem of settlements stems from the shortage of apartments and houses on the island”. For this reason, he insisted that “the streets, lots and plots cannot and should not be used as housing or considered a way of life”.
Emphasising that the Council will act “with determination and firmness, but also with the necessary sensitivity to support these people”, Triguero recalled some of the projects and developments that the current government team, led by the Partido Popular, has “reactivated” in recent months.
