Ibiza at Fitur: Green light for 2nd phase of the Santa Eulària Palacio de Congresos

The Govern finally gives its support to the Palacio de Congresos project, which will cost 21 million euros, will be financed with 10 million from European funds and will be put out to tender this year to start construction immediately.

Two decades after the start of the Santa Eulària Palacio de Congresos project, the City Council will at last see one of its greatest dreams fulfilled: to build the second phase. The president of the Govern, Francina Armengol, has taken advantage of Fitur to announce at the Ibiza stand, her support for the project that both the Consistory and the Consell have been championing for decades. It will cost 21 million (plus VAT), of which the Government will contribute “between 8 and 10 million”, according to Armengol, the City Council 5 and the Consell another 5 million euros. The amount that the Balearic Executive will spend comes from the 245 million euros of European Funds that the Ministry of Tourism, with Reyes Maroto at the head, has assigned to the Balearic Islands.

“It is an important infrastructure for the island that will undoubtedly help us to deseasonalize and bring quality tourism, as it will allow us to host major events of all kinds,” said Armengol, who stressed that the original project has been modified to be “sustainable”, so that its energy management will have “zero” greenhouse gas emissions, “which shows that we are bravely committed to fighting climate change.”

Same management model as the Palma Palacio de Congresos

The management of the infrastructure, according to the Balearic president, will be “public-private, just like the Palma Palacio de Congresos functions”, and the Govern will also participate.

In this sense, the Balearic Minister of Tourism, Iago Negueruela, has described the Palma model as “good”, although he pointed out that they still have to “define it” for Ibiza’s case. The idea is that “the public part covers some of the cost of the infrastructure and a fee is established for a number of years” to the company that wins the bid to operate it: “There are several models in Spain of public-private partnership through the management bodies, which is something that still needs to be worked out with the Consell and the City Council,” explained Negueruela.

Armengol has also commented that the new Phase 2 Palacio de Congresos project has “extensive support from the entire convention sector of the island, the population and economic sectors that will benefit from this infrastructure.”
