The Pitiusas closed the month of August with gread hotel bed occupancy percentages, especially in Formentera, with eight out of ten beds occupied (82.7%), which implies a decrease of just seven points compared to August 2019 – with all accommodation establishments open. Quite a success.
The case of the island of Ibiza is noticeably different. Firstly because the occupancy was not so high last month and stood at 77.9% (not a negligible figure, during a summer still pending the ups and downs of covid that tourist market faces), according to the balance on the occupation provided yesterday by the Hotel Business Federation of Ibiza and Formentera (Fehif).
But above all because this percentage of vacancies sold in August is with approximately 70% of the hotel establishments open. That is, the Ibizan hotel sector put seven out of ten hotel establishments on the market last month, which are usually full during a normal August, but nevertheless managed to occupy an average of eight out of ten of their beds.
The August figures are satisfactory, but we won’t be setting off fireworks because we have barely had two good months this summer”
Ana Gordillo – President of the Fehif
For the president of the Fehif, Ana Gordillo, the occupancy figures for August are “satisfactory, but we won’t be setting off fireworkds because we have barely had two good months this summer”, July and August. In any case, she recognizes that this data is a “relief” for hotel entrepreneurs, with the business they have generated this summer “they can pay off debts and pay taxes,” she said.
Gordillo believes that the islands have been among the least affected tourist destinations in the country by the health crisis, mainly because they have become the choice of many domestic visitors and the choise of the European Union. Why? “Because of its proximity and the security offered” by the two islands, she explained.
