The Consell of Ibiza asks citizens what kind of tourism model they want

The Consell Insular d’Eivissa has launched the design of a comprehensive and sustainable strategy for tourism development and repositioning, with the aim of achieving a balance between economic prosperity, environmental and heritage conservation, and the social well-being of the island and its residents. According to a press release, the initiative also seeks to guarantee Ibiza’s attractiveness and competitiveness as a top tourist destination in the medium and long term.

The project, promoted by the Department of Tourism Promotion, stems from the need to respond in a strategic, structured and consensual way to the challenges and imbalances of the current tourism model. Its purpose is to reposition Ibiza, strengthen its brand and define a tourism model for the future, based on advanced and participatory governance.

To achieve these goals, the Consell will carry out ongoing work until February 2027, in which the active participation of both the tourism sector and the general public will be essential. This process will make it possible to gather different perspectives and build a relevant, inclusive and widely supported tourism strategy. The participatory process includes two main areas: one focused on the tourism sector and another on citizens. The first aims to gather key information, strengthen participatory governance and foster collaboration among stakeholders, reflecting the reality of the territory and sharing the project’s progress. The citizen consultation, meanwhile, seeks to understand residents’ opinions and expectations regarding tourism, through an open online survey available on the Consell d’Eivissa’s website, allowing for accessible and transparent participation.

The island’s Director of Tourism Promotion, Juan Miguel Costa, emphasised that “this process marks a turning point: Ibiza needs to plan its tourism future with a shared vision, where balance between the territory, citizens and the sector takes centre stage — with the goal of achieving a model that guarantees the island’s economic, social and environmental prosperity in the short, medium and long term”.
