Formentera is preparing for a major shift in the regulation of vehicles during the summer season. The well-known Formentera.eco project, which has limited the entry and circulation of cars on the island since 2019, is changing its criteria. From this summer onwards, it will no longer be only the number of vehicles that matters, but also the environmental label of each car — or whether it has one at all.
Until now, the system established a maximum quota of vehicles, which was reduced year after year. However, the Consell de Formentera is now opting for a model based on energy efficiency and environmental impact, in line with national requirements for Low Emission Zones.
The key issue: the environmental label
The Councillor for Environment and Mobility, Verónica Castelló, presented two possible scenarios this Monday at the Consell d’Entitats. These would apply between 2025 and 2029, and the difference between them is clear — and decisive.
- Option 1: Vehicles without an environmental sticker would no longer be allowed to enter Formentera from 2027.
- Option 2: The ban on vehicles without an environmental sticker would come into force this summer. In addition, category B vehicles would be phased out within two years.
Associations will vote on which of the two proposals will ultimately be adopted on January 19.
