Government expects to approve aid for the Ibiza dana before the end of the year

The national government expects to approve, before the end of this year, the declaration of Ibiza as an ‘Area Seriously Affected by a Civil Protection Emergency’ — the current legal term for what was formerly known as a disaster zone.

The legal process has already been set in motion after the Ibiza Town Council unanimously approved last Saturday, during an extraordinary plenary session convened solely for that purpose, the request to be submitted to the Council of Ministers.

The Consistory was the first public institution on the island to make this request, which is also expected to be endorsed in the coming days by Sant Josep Town Council, the Island Council of Ibiza (Consell Insular), and the Balearic Government.

“The intensity of the rainfall caused serious disruption to the daily lives of residents and visitors in our municipality and resulted in significant material damage to private property, businesses, and public infrastructure”, recalled Mayor Rafael Triguero last Saturday — just five days after around 250 litres per square metre fell in the city, more than half the island’s annual average rainfall of around 400 litres.
