The Balearic Ministry of Environment has imposed a fine of 324.324€ on the promoter of illegal renovations on two villas and several new constructions on the beachfront of Illetes de Porroig (Sant Josep), in a Protected Easement Zone. The affected land is also classified as a Natural Area of Special Interest of High Level Protection and are included in the Natura 2000 Network as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA), and are also located in a Fire Risk Prevention Area.
The sanction corresponds to 25% of the estimated budget of the works carried out, which amounts to almost 1.3 million euros, most of it in the renovations of two dwellings (1.1 million) and exterior works (just over 97,000 euros).
On February 9th an inspector for the coastal services of the Balearic Ministry of Environment reported the works which were executed without a license or the presentation of a declaration of responsibility. Previously, in May of last year, the inspector first detected the illegal works and ordered them to be stopped. However, on a second visit, that of the 9th February this year, the official found not only that the works had gone ahead but that they were practically finished.
After the first visit of the supervisor, the promoter requested the legal approval for part of the works carried out. This file is still being processed. In mid-September of last year, the promotor was required to submit various documentation, such as a current license granted by the Town Hall of Sant Josep for the construction of the houses and the authorization of the Coastal Prefecture or the Marine Military Command if the houses are prior to 1969, among other issues, which, at least as of April 30th, had still not been provided.
