Storm Ingrid swept through Ibiza on Sunday with exceptional force, completely tearing off the roof of a commercial warehouse in the Eurocentro industrial estate.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) had activated an orange warning and alerted on social media to the risk of very strong wind gusts, which could exceed 90 kilometres per hour before midnight. The forecast was borne out.
According to the 112 emergency services, hurricane-force winds brought down 22 trees across the island. However, the most striking incident involved the roof of the Fita warehouse, located on the Santa Eulària road next to the Eroski supermarket. A powerful gust lifted the roof entirely, sending it flying until it landed in the car park of the shopping area, opposite the Hipermenaje store.

Fortunately, the Fita premises has a double roof, meaning the incident did not affect the operation of the business.
Hipermenaje issued a statement to customers via social media announcing that the store would remain closed on Monday. “The safety of our team and our customers comes first, so we have taken this decision as a precautionary measure. We hope to reopen very soon and welcome customers back as normal”, the company said.
Strong winds are expected to continue over the coming days. Aemet has activated a yellow warning for strong winds and coastal phenomena for Tuesday and Wednesday, with gusts forecast to reach up to 60 kilometres per hour.
