La Peña Deportiva will be in the last 16 of the Royal Spanish Football Federation Cup after beating Atzeneta by 0-2 in the first round, a single match played at the El Regit stadium in the Valencian town.
Manolo Gonzalez’s team extended their good league form, where they occupy second place in Segunda RFEF Group 3, with a another second-half win thanks to goals from Albert Torras in the 60th minute and Lucas Alcazar in the 81st minute. The Peñistas had to dig deep against the Valencian third division leaders, for whom former Peñista, Diego Piquero, played in the second half.
Goalkeeper Niko had a good debut with a one-on-one save in the first half. Pau Torres hit the post and defender Badal was forced off in the first half through injury.
After the victory and the passage to the next round, the Santa Eulària coach explained that the match was “complicated”, against a “very good rival…with a large budget” who they faced last season in Segunda B. “But the team knew how to compete and deal with the pressure. In the last minutes we were on the right track and we won the tie,” added Gonzalez, who described it as “positive to continue winning and keep a clean sheet”.
