Iago Negueruela, Minister of Economic Model, Tourism, and Labour, stated yesterday during the presentation of labor data that 2021 would be “a year of employment and economic recovery, with an average affiliation in the Balearic Islands of 475.000 people during the 12 months, representing a 27% increase over the entire year of 2020.” It also stated that unemployment has decreased significantly, with an annual average of 66,618 individuals, the lowest average in the country. Even the CAEB praised the “good” and “favorable” numbers on unemployment and Social Security enrolment in the Balearic Islands, which “support the trend of economic recovery following the epidemic,” according to the employer.
If you look at the attachment to Social Security last November, for which there is information, it is not strange that there is so much shared euphoria (which is unusual). For example, in Ibiza, 49,286 jobs were produced, 9.4% higher than in 2020 (4,232 more jobs). It is common for it to be higher than in the previous worst year in these islands’ history. However, it has not done so in this manner: affiliations are 1 percent greater than in 2019 (493 jobs more), and it is the biggest number of donors in the history of this island in the month of November. Never previously seen.
In Formentera, there were 2,765 registered jobs, 118 more than a year earlier (4.4 %), but 38 fewer (a pittance) than in 2019. It is the best record for the southern Pitiusa since these figures were compiled, together with the figure from two years ago.
December saw more self-employed people than ever before: 12,660 in Ibiza, 628 more than a year ago and 440 (3.6%) more than in 2019
December saw more self-employed people than ever before: 12,660 in Ibiza, 628 more than a year ago and 440 (3.6%) more than in 2019. In this instance, it is equally possible to assert that there were never so many. In Formentera, 858 people were discharged, 26 more than the previous year and only one less than in 2019.
Ibiza and Formentera are seeing a remarkable recovery on many fronts, including some unexpected ones. The construction is doing well: there are already 8,524 contributors, 800 more than a year ago and roughly 200 more than two years ago. This is yet another historic milestone. The majority (4,449 workers) build buildings, which is 400 more than in 2020. There were 3,922 people registered in specialist building activities, 314 more than a year ago, an unparalleled level in Ibiza. Formentera has reported 249 building construction jobs (209 in 2020 and 231 in 2019).
