Singer-songwriter Pau Riba, closely linked to Formentera, dies

Pau Riba was diagnosed in October with pancreatic cancer.

The singer-songwriter Pau Riba died on Sunday at the age of 73 after a long battle with cancer. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he had to be admitted to hospital again at the beginning of the year. Even so, he remained active and performed several concerts.

The musician announced his struggle on Twitter on December 7: “After six months of excruciating pain and with the family doctor wrongly pointing to psychosomatic pain, in October I was finally hospitalized with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. It cannot be removed, but it is what it is. You’re late, they say. I have started chemo and thanks to the help of many friends who have put a lot of effort in, I have managed to start a hyperthermia treatment and some high dose vitamin shots at the Khuab Institute, which have us very hopeful. Although what I liked the most was the idea of being cured with sound frequencies, but this is not possible for now either”.

Born in Palma in 1948, Pau Riba is the composer of some thirty LP’s (including the double ‘Dioptria’, chosen as the best Catalan album of the 20th century by the magazine ‘Enderrock’) and writer of fifteen books, and was recording a new album with the Orchestra Fireluche. He was the grandson of the deputy and founder of Unió Democràtica de Catalunya, Pau Romeva; of the poet and humanist Carles Riba; and of the poet Clementina Arderiu.
