Formentera will bring together nautical businesses and marine professionals on Thursday, 29 October, to explore ways to protect the island’s coastal waters and improve cooperation between activities that share its marine environment.
The free event, called Formentera: Understanding to Conserve, will take place from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm at the Centre d’Esports Nàutics de Formentera (CENF) in La Savina. Participants will also be able to join online via Microsoft Teams.
The initiative is organised by the Taula de Custòdia de Formentera, with support from the Balearic Islands government and the Life INTEMARES project, and in collaboration with WWF, according to environmental consultancy Whitesand Solutions.
Bringing together the sectors that use Formentera’s coastline
The workshop aims to bring together representatives from a wide range of marine and coastal activities, including maritime transport, yacht charters, dinghy sailing, kayaking, fishing, scuba diving, snorkelling and open-water swimming.
Participants will share their experiences and discuss how these activities coexist and interact, as well as the potential impacts they may have on the island’s marine environment.
Organisers say the aim is to listen to the experiences of those working in these sectors, identify their needs and explore opportunities for collaboration. The initiative also seeks to improve how environmental information is communicated to both industry professionals and visitors.
Best practices and environmental protection
The programme will highlight Formentera’s natural heritage and share practical measures to help conserve it. It will also explore how businesses can better inform their customers and employees about protecting the island’s marine and coastal environment.
Participants will also review the most relevant environmental regulations, helping businesses understand the rules that apply to their activities.
Natura 2000 recognition for tourism businesses
Another key topic will be the planned process for recognising tourism businesses in connection with the Natura 2000 Network, an initiative being promoted by the Balearic Islands government.
The session will explain how businesses may obtain a label linked to protected areas within Europe’s Natura 2000 network.

How to attend the free Formentera workshop
The event is open to interested participants, who can attend in person at the Centre d’Esports Nàutics de Formentera in La Savina or join remotely via Microsoft Teams.
Registration is free, but participants must complete a short registration form by 8 pm on Wednesday, 28 October.
The workshop offers an opportunity for businesses and professionals whose work depends on Formentera’s waters to share ideas and identify practical ways to support the long-term conservation of the island’s marine environment.
