Contemporary art will become a tool for supporting social projects this Sunday, October 4, in Sant Mateu d’Albarca. Juntos House will host ‘Negotiating Belonging’, a charity auction organised by Art Initiatives, with part of the proceeds going to Espais de Vida, a citizen-led initiative founded in Ibiza, and Anno’s One Fine Day, an organisation working with children and young people in Kibera, Nairobi.
The event brings together works by 12 artists around the theme of belonging and the cultural, social and environmental factors that shape people’s relationship with the places they call home.
According to the organisers, the theme takes on particular significance in Ibiza, where access to housing and land has become increasingly difficult.
Espais de Vida: taking land and property out of the speculative market
Espais de Vida was created with the aim of removing land and properties from the speculative market and permanently dedicating them to social uses.
The initiative proposes that owners of properties and buildings in the Balearic Islands can donate or transfer them for projects focused on affordable housing, regenerative agriculture and cultural and eco-social activities.
The Ibiza-based project is currently in the process of being established as a foundation.
Funds raised through the auction will help finance communication and outreach activities, allowing Espais de Vida to present its proposal to residents, property owners and institutions across the islands.
“Holding an event about belonging in support of Espais de Vida makes perfect sense: in Ibiza, continuing to belong to this place means having somewhere to live, land to cultivate and spaces where we can come together,” says its general coordinator, Marcos Tur Witt.
Supporting children and young people in Kibera and Nairobi
The second beneficiary of the event will be Anno’s One Fine Day, which runs arts programmes for children and young people in Kibera, Nairobi, with the aim of providing them with tools for their personal and creative development.
The event will begin between 12pm and 1pm with a reception and a presentation of the artworks in the garden pergola at Juntos House.
Guests will then be served a three-course lunch prepared by chef Pau Garcia Fidalgo, using produce grown in the venue’s own regenerative fields as well as ingredients supplied by local producers.
The live charity auction will take place after lunch.
