Virgen del Carmen on Ibiza: Es Cubells, in memory and devotion

The small town of es Cubells a large group of residents and tourists gathers again to celebrate the traditional feast for the Virgen del Carmen, one of the most beautiful seafairing processions of the island for its descent to the pier.

Es Cubells rose yesterday to celebrate the feast of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint par excellence of the sailors. At 10 am the villagers attended the Mass celebration before the procession, which descends from the church of the town to the small wooden pier. During the Mass some verses were recited by volunteers and the priest, which ended with the singing of the Salve Marinera in Latin, hymn to the patron saint.

When the procession with the image of the Virgen del Carmen arrived at the dock houses after the Eucharist, there awaited the boat in which the patron sailed with the residents and tourists who decided to come on this special holiday celebration for many people, especially for those who are dedicated to the sea or have had a family member who was a sailor. And those who embark throw flowers into the sea in memory of those who lost their lives in it or to ask for protection from the virgin.

“For many years it has been a tradition in my family to celebrate these holidays. Many of my relatives have been dedicated to the sea, even my father came every year with the llaüt from Cala Vedella very early in the morning. They made the procession and now for us it is a very nice day,” explained Neus Marí, a resident of the village. She has made the procession on foot for the first time because she had always embarked, and for her it has been a new experience.

Residents are not the only ones who decide to come to es Cubells to celebrate this day. “It’s the second time I’ve come. I am from Girona but I have lived on Ibiza for many years and when I first saw this procession, I fell in love and have decided to return. Besides, I’m bringing some flowers and I’ll throw them into the sea in honor of the Virgen del Carmen,” says Carmen Boada.
