May 30 is approaching, the expected opening date of UNVRS, the new temple of Ibizan nightlife, that already has everything ready and begins to reveal its secrets. A nightclub that will feature residencies of some of the most important artists in electronic music, but that hopes to become something more, something like the beacon of global nightlife.
Created by The Night League, the creative team behind Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza, led by founder, owner and CEO Yann Pissenem, UNVRS rises on the remains of the iconic Ku and Privilege in Sant Rafel and the aim of its promoters is to create “the most impressive and complex club in the world,” they say.
The exterior of the property is intended to be a tribute to traditional Ibizan architecture, with whitewashed walls, natural stone textures and earthy materials, but, as you walk through its doors, the space reveals a completely different dimension. “Each element – from the concrete and steel to the furniture and vegetation – has been chosen and arranged with absolute precision, forming part of a story where nothing is left to chance,” say the developers in a note.
“The club integrates indoor and outdoor areas in a fluid way, inviting movement through terraces, mirrored corridors and superimposed levels, where each corner reveals its own sensory universe. Each room has its own identity, with architectural references ranging from brutalism to retro-futurism, including a reinterpreted contemporary art deco. Surfaces, materials and shapes have been designed with absolute precision, not only to make a visual impact, but also to immerse each visitor in an unprecedented experience,” they continue.
Each element is unique
To create a different image they wanted no element to be conventional, from the door handles to the pendant lights, from the sofas to the dj booths, each element has been custom-made: designed by internationally renowned studios or handcrafted by master craftsmen. “The aesthetic DNA of UNVRS fuses Haussmannian elegance, sci-fi surrealism and organic geometry, giving shape to a timeless space, detached from any era,” they emphasize.
Outside, the aesthetic evolves: a redesigned dome, wrapped in climbing vegetation and vertebrate structures inspired by H.R. Giger, “embraces the terrace in a symbiosis of steel and organic forms.”
Another idea they have developed is that, although it is a discotheque, the concept is close to that of a large auditorium. Thus, the heart of the space is a huge, enveloping dance floor, “designed to offer high-capacity experiences and total sensory immersion.” The roof structure is designed to support large-scale production equipment, while transparent screens and modular scenic elements allow for night-to-night reinventions.
Lighting is articulated in three integrated systems-functional, architectural and scenic-all managed from intelligent central software. The sound philosophy meets the standards of a world-class opera house. A custom sound system from L-Acoustics has been designed specifically for the hall. “From the front row to the farthest corners, the sound experience is consistent, immersive and rich. The acoustic insulation also serves a thermal function, making the venue efficient and environmentally friendly,” they abound.
Conceived for transform night after night, the venue’s modular architecture will accommodate large-scale scenic changes and major productions developed in collaboration with show creators High Scream, “elevating each show to a level that rivals the world’s most iconic stages and ensuring that each performance reaches a higher dimension,” according to the release.
Special work has also been done with the VIP concept, to go beyond a reserved area to “a discreet, immersive, unforgettable experience. A tour designed to offer exclusivity, immersion…and that point of attitude that makes the difference.” The main VIP balcony surrounds the inverted U-shaped room, while behind closed doors, The Catacomb allows you to move discreetly between spaces and to the outside, where a large outdoor terrace awaits, exclusively for VIP guests.
The terraces
Although without forgetting that a nightclub is a space for everyone, so they have opted for an open and accessible design, with large areas designed to meet, connect and get carried away. Something in which the terraces have a lot to do, so that the public can go out and take a break. Surrounded by greenery and enveloped in a design of sculptural forms, these areas reflect the materials and atmosphere of the main hall.
In addition, the iconic dome terrace, visible from the road, offers a unique panoramic view of Ibiza town. A place to chat, meet again or just let yourself go.
Another completely new space is The Wild Comet, and it is far from being a simple bathroom: it is a fully equipped microclub designed in detail. In the center, a dj booth surrounded by sound-reactive lights and walls treated with the same acoustic care as the main room. Each toilet has its own personality, no templates, no repetition. “Inspired by science fiction, retro-futurism and art deco, they are part of the visual narrative of the club. They are not simply walk-through areas, but moments designed to be remembered,” they add.
Finally, the promoters of UNVRS want food and drink to be an essential part of the experience. A gastronomic space offers casual but elevated options, from bold dishes to vegan offerings. Dishes have been chosen to avoid excessive smells or uncomfortable textures, and drinks are served at optimal temperatures thanks to temperature-controlled storage systems. “Whether it’s to recharge, recuperate or take a break, everything flows naturally from start to finish,” concludes the UNVRS statement.
