The yacht Eos, one of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, is these days plying the waters of Ibiza. The boat was built by order of the communication magnate Barry Diller, who has an estimated wealth, according to Forbes, of 4,000 million euros.
This nautical masterpiece redefined the scales of luxury and size, ranking as the largest sailing yacht on the planet in 2006 thanks to her 93 meters in length. She accommodates 16 guests and hosts a total crew of 21 to ensure a first class luxury experience.
The Eos is valued at 60 million euros with an approximate annual running cost of around six million. This yacht is not only known for its grandeur and elegance, but also for its performance at sea, reaching a top speed of 16 knots.
Diller, her owner, is a well-known figure in the u.S. business landscape, primarily in the media and entertainment sector. He is chairman and senior executive of two major corporations: IAC (InterActiveCorp) and Expedia Group. Diller’s expansive career includes pivotal roles as chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures – where he oversaw the production of such classics as Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Beverly Hills Cop – and later as president of Fox Inc.
As a curious factwhen Steve Jobs was ousted from Apple in the 1980s, Barry Diller hired him as a consultant at Paramount. But he didn’t end up being a good fit with the corporate structure, so Diller let him go, saying, “He wants to create a new world. We’re just trying to make movies.” And then Jobs… succeeded.
When he was at ABC in the 1960s, Diller came up with the ‘movie of the week’ format: films made directly for television. This idea was a huge success and transformed the way television could compete with film. It was a pioneering concept that generated huge revenues and cemented his reputation as an innovator.
But Eos also suffered a serious incident. It caught fire in 2012 while docked in the port of Oslo. At the time there were 18 people on board who had to be evacuated; neither Diller nor his wife were on the ship at the time.
