Salvem sa Badia de Portmany reported last Monday through its website that, around 2:30pm yesterday, Tuesday, a “ large stain of diesel was detected in the bay of Sant Antoni that ended up spreading inland, dragged by the westerly winds”.
For the moment the origin of this spill is unknown, which they estimate to be about a thousand litres of this fuel, although in their report they point out some theories. “In any case, the spill constitutes a very serious environmental attack on the bay,” they remind us.
Once the fuel stain was detected, Salvem sa Badia explained that the situation was communicated to Emergency 112 and Ports de les Illes Balears (Ports IB), which could do nothing “because they do not have the necessary means to recover the fuel from the sea”.
“To do so,” added the organization, “a boat with a skimmer would have been required,” a system specifically designed to remove polluting liquids from the sea. “From Salvem sa Badia we believe that the administration should seriously consider the possibility of having a boat of this type for the western area of the island,” stated the organization.
The body of the Govern confirmed the existence of a “slick of fuel outside the port of unknown origin and located in external waters over which Ports IB has no jurisdiction”.
